The Merchants were started in 1978 by General Manager Tom Green(pictured) and Head Coach Danny Shaix. Those first teams were 16-18u HS age teams. The first team had 8 wins and 18 losses. In 1978 the cost to play on the Merchants was $300 per player. At that time the premier baseball program was the American Legion Pirates ran by SJND Hall of Fame HC Ray Freitas. The Pirates had a lot of really good players on the Island in those early days
